Alison Gopnik Biography

Alison Gopnik is one of the most popular and richest Psychologist who was born on June 16, 1955 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States. Alison Gopnik, born June 16, 1955, is an American psychologist and affiliate professor of philosophy at University of California. Her work in cognitive and language development is well-known. She specializes in the effects of language on thought, the creation of a theory about mind, and causal learning. Her articles on psychology and cognition science have appeared in Science, Scientific American and The Times Literary Supplement, The New York Review of Books and The New York Times. Her work includes four books as well as more than 100 journal articles.

The Singularity, a feature-length documentary by Doug Wolens that documents Gopnik’s work in cognitive learning and futurist ideas, was released at the end 2012 and has been called “a major achievement in its documentation and counter-futurist thoughts” and “the most comprehensive documentary on the Singularity.”

Gopnik has done extensive work with applying Bayesian networks to human learning and has published and presented numerous papers on the topic. Gopnik says of this work, “The interesting thing about Bayes nets is that they search out causes rather than mere associations. They give you a single representational structure for dealing both with things that just happen and with interventions—things you observe others doing to the world or things you do to the world. This is important because there is something really special about the way we treat and understand human action. We give it a special status in terms of our causal inferences. We think of human actions as things that you do that are designed to change things in the world as opposed to other events that just take place.”

In her book “The Philosophical Baby: What Children’s Minds Tell Us about Truth, Love, and the Meaning of Life,” Gopnik explores how infants and young children cognitively develop by using processes similar to those used by scientists, including experimenting on their environment. The book explains how an environment maximized for an infant’s cognitive development is one that is safe to explore. The book also explores what babies can tell us about love, imagination and identity, as well as considering the broader philosophical significance of care-giving. “The Philosophical Baby” has been recognized as a New York Times Extended List Bestseller, a San Francisco Chronicle Bestseller, and an Independent Bookstores Bestseller. It has also received acclaim on the New York Times Editor’s Choice list, the San Francisco Chronicle Editors Choice list, and as one of Babble’s 50 Best Parenting Books. It has also been recognized as recommended reading by Scientific American.

Gopnik is the child of Myrna Gopnik, a linguist. Blake Gopnik (Newsweek’s art critic) and Adam Gopnik (New Yorker writer) are her siblings. She is the youngest of six children. She was previously married to George Lewinski, a journalist, and she has three children: Nicholas, Alexei, and Andres. Alvy Ray Smith (co-founder of Pixar), was her husband.

Alison Gopnik Net Worth

Alison Gopnik is one of the richest Psychologist from United States. According to our analysis, Wikipedia, Forbes & Business Insider, Alison Gopnik's net worth $5 Million. (Last Update: December 11, 2023)

McGill University awarded Gopnik a B.A. in 1975, with a major in philosophy and psychology. She received her D.Phil. in 1980. Oxford University awarded her a D.Phil in experimental psychology. Before joining the faculty of UC Berkeley in 1988, she worked at the University of Toronto.

Gopnik published a 2009 paper in Hume Studies, arguing that historical records regarding the circumstances surrounding David Hume’s writing of A Treatise of Human Nature were incorrect. Gopnik claimed that Hume had had access to the Royal College at La Fleche library, a Jesuit institution founded by Henri V. While Hume was working on the Treatise from his home in nearby La Fleche, Charles Francois Dolu (a Jesuit missionary who was an expert in different religions and had previously visited Siam’s French embassy) was also living there at the time. Dolu also met Ippolito Desderi, a Jesuit missionary who had traveled to Tibet between 1716-1721. Gopnik suggests that Dolu’s exposure to Theravada Buddhism may have been the reason for the Buddhist influence in Hume’s Treatise. Gopnik refers to a number letters Hume wrote that mentioned his time at La Fleche as well as his encounter with Jesuits from the college. This Buddhist connection, through the Jesuit college’s learning, is what causes Hume to be influenced to reject the ontological reality and self. Gopnik also links this to the Indian Buddhist concept of Sunyata (“Emptiness”)

In April, 2013, Gopnik was inducted into The American Academy of Arts and Sciences. She is, as of 2014, a Fellow of the Cognitive Science Society.
