Coyne was elected in March 2007 to be her Liberal Party of Canada candidate in Toronto Danforth but withdrew later in the year. The year 2008 was the time she contested to win the national Liberal nomination for the electoral district in Don Valley West but withdrew to support Rob Oliphant.
Following the leadership campaign, Coyne made an unsuccessful bid for the Liberal Party of Canada’s nomination in Ottawa West—Nepean in 2014.

After the demise of the Accord partially because of the Newfoundland House of Assembly, she was against her opposition to the Charlottetown Accord, a subsequent attempt to amend the Canadian constitution. It was the Charlottetown agreement was offered to a referendum across the country in 1992 but it was ultimately defeated by a large majority of Canadian voters. Coyne was the leader of an organization that was one of “No” committees in the campaign and was a vocal opponent of the agreement.
On June 27, 2012, Coyne announced that she would be a candidate for leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, during the Party’s 2013 leadership contest, which was won ultimately by Justin Trudeau. Her campaign was managed by blogger Jeff Jedras.
