Hawkins was the child of Joye (nee Strange) and Paul Edward Hawkins. Hawkins is a fifth generation Utahn, his great-great-grandmother having arrived in the Salt Lake Valley with one of the first handcart companies. His father was a member of an U.S. Army occupation force in Germany following World War II and received an appointment into his U.S. Air Force upon finishing his studies at The University of Utah. Hawkins lived outside of Utah for the majority of his youth due to his father’s military and job assignments brought his group throughout California, Hawaii, Georgia, Florida, and Kentucky.
In the press as”the “Citizen Candidate,” on June 16, 1999 Hawkins declared his intention to challenge senator Orrin Hatch. Within days of his announcement Hawkins began traveling around across the state, giving speeches to small groups of people. As of 2000, Hawkins declared his intention to run for United States Senate and challenged Sen. Hatch for the Republican nomination.
In 2004, Hawkins faced Rep. Chris Cannon for the Utah’s 3rd Congressional District seat in the House of Representatives. Ultimately, Cannon became the Republican nominee and won the election with 63.4% of the vote.
In 2010, Hawkins ran for Salt Lake County Auditor. He defeated the incumbent Jeff Hatch (D) by 1.09% of the vote.
Hawkins started working for the education process within the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints as an instructor in the seminary in 1986. His first position was at the seminary located next to West High School in Salt Lake City. While working in West High, he began instructing Institute courses at the University of Utah Law School in 1993. Hawkins was appointed the principal instructor at West High Seminary in 1997. West High seminary in 1997 until 1999 when he resigned be a candidate for U.S. Senate.

Hawkins earned his degree from Kentucky’s Bardstown High School in 1974. He was then assigned to as an LDS mission. Greg believes in the rule of law and tries to follow the law with exactness. When the law was changed, he dropped the lawsuit. Again, he did the courageous thing and sought for reconciliation with his political and legal opponents.”
