His brother Rifaat al Assad tried to take power from him but was forced out. In 1994, his eldest son, Rifaat al-Assad, was killed in a car accident. He also had three other children.
When he became president, he did a lot to deradicalize the Ba’ath party by loosening restrictions on civilians as well as encouraging growth in private sector.
