Prestel Publishing published “Lucas Reiner Los Angeles Trees 2001-2008: Paintings Drawings Filmstills” by Petra Giloy Hirtz in 2009. It also included an essay by Fred Dewey. Dewey refers to Reiner’s approach to trees in this book as the “old monk poet Basho”, who, according to legend, would travel into the mountains to pay homage to certain trees.” Reiner, however, is more familiar with trees by car. The trees are cut for non-arboreal or non-natural reasons, but they still retain their natural responses to heat, light and soil. The result is tranquil, inviting for contemplation and, in a final move hint at the story and mystery of the shape.
