Alongside his other projects his work, he was renowned for his design of Dead History, a postmodern typeface (issued by the Emigre digital type foundry) which combines the characteristics of the round sans serif typeface with an elegant Neo-classical serif typeface. When the personal computer around the middle of the 1980s, Makela was among the first to try digital programs like Photoshop along with Adobe Illustrator. In the process, Makela created an unique distinctive and controversial aesthetic for design. Particularly, his disdain for minimalist, clean problems-solving design principles–that are often associated with modern corporate graphic design–provoked many debates among strong, older-guard designers like Massimo Vignelli Paul Rand, and Henry Wolf.
