Svetlana Masterkova is one of the most popular and richest Middle-Distance Runner who was born on January 17, 1968 in Achinsk, Krasnoyarsk Krai, Russia. Masterkova did not replicate her success during her World Championships the next year because an Achilles tendon injury caused her withdraw from the heats of 1500 m. Her 1998 season was fantastic and was capped off by an impressive win in the 1500m race in the European Championships. In 1999, at the World championships, Masterkova again competed in both the intermediate distance races. She was awarded bronze in the 800 meters that was won by Ludmila Formanova. She also took the title of 1500 meters. It was her final major victory. While Masterkova took part during the Sydney Olympics but she opted to skip her 1500m heat. Masterkova made her announcement of retirement on Znamensky Indoor stadium on 7 January 2003.
In 1996 she began her return to athletics in 1996. Instead of just running the 800 metres, Masterkova also decided to participate in the 1500 m which was a distance she hadn’t competed in for the past four years. In the Russian Championships, she won both distances with top times. But, she wasn’t considered a strong contender for the 800m Olympic gold medal. Maria de Lurdes Mutola and Ana Fidelia Quirot were expected to be the main contenders in Atlanta. Masterkova led at the beginning of the race and was the leader throughout the race to win the title of Olympic champion. Following this shock, Masterkova caused a major surprise by also winning the 1500m in the same manner which was a step closer to Tatyana Kazankina’s feat in the 1976 Olympics (Kelly Holmes would replicate the feat at the 2004 Olympics). Her season was concluded by setting two world records for the mile and 1000 metres distances.
