Since his appointment, Gonzalez has spent every Thanksgiving with his U.S. Armed Forces stationed abroad. He celebrated the holiday alongside troops in Afghanistan in 2017 and also in Kuwait and Djibouti in 2018.
Gonzalez won the 2016 general election and took office on January 3, 2017. Gonzalez was re-elected to serve a second term in the 116th Congress, taking his oath of office on January 3, 2019.
In the 115th Congress, Gonzalez participated in bipartisan and bicameral congressional delegations to a variety of countries around the globe. In Japan, he met with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzō Abe, and Japanese First Lady Akie Abe. He also met with Japanese Minister of Foreign Affairs, Tarō Kōno, as well as U.S. Ambassador to Japan, Bill Hagerty, and other respective government officials. In Guatemala, he met with President Jimmy Morales. Gonzalez announced his candidacy for the 2016 elections to The United States House of Representatives in the 15th congressional district of Texas after Ruben Hinojosa, who is the incumbent, announced that the decision to not seek another term. Gonzalez won the Democratic Party nomination, defeating Sonny Palacios in the runoff election. He was defeated by Republican Tim Westley in the general election in November, winning 57.3 percent of the vote , compared to Westley’s 37.7 percent.
The year 1992 was the time that Gonzalez obtained his Bachelor in Science in business administration for aviation at the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University on the Corpus Christi Naval Air Station. In high school and through university, Gonzalez traveled to almost 100 countries in the globe. At the end of 1996, Gonzalez was a graduate of Texas Wesleyan University School of Law (now the Texas A&M University School of Law) and received the Juris Doctor. He established V.
